Improving School Health Through WASH

Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is essential for a safe and effective learning environment. Without it, students—especially girls—often face health risks and may even stop attending school. In India, over 1.5 million children die each year from waterborne diseases, and more than 15% of girls drop out of school due to poor sanitation (WHO & UDISE+).

In response to this critical need, the Rotary Club of Belur launched the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) project. A baseline study of 140 schools in southern West Bengal revealed widespread lack of clean water, gender-separated toilets, handwashing stations, and menstrual hygiene support.

Through the WinS project—part of Rotary International’s global WASH in Schools campaign—20 schools are receiving vital upgrades including:

  • Clean drinking water systems
  • Gender-segregated, functional toilets
  • Handwashing stations
  • Menstrual health support, including pad vending machines and incinerators
  • Hygiene education and training for over 15,000 students and staff

This initiative not only improves student health but also boosts school attendance and empowers young girls to stay in school with confidence. Together, we’re building healthier schools—and brighter futures.
